Matadors Take Second Round Lead at Firestone Grill Invitational Behind Kimura and Medina

Oct. 4, 2010

NIPOMO, Calif. - Behind the solid play of Kylie Kimura and Maurissa Medina, the Cal State Northridge women's golf team is in position to defend its Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational as the Matadors carry a 16-shot lead into the final round at Monarch Dunes G.C.

Northridge posted rounds of 305 and 307 on Monday for a two-round score of 612. The Matadors lead second place Santa Clara (628) by 16 strokes heading into Tuesday's final round. Cal State Fullerton (629) is third, host Cal Poly (631) is fourth and Portland is fifth in the nine-team field.

Northridge won the 2009 Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational with a three-round score of 917 behind Medina's third place finish.

Kimura, who finished 18th at the season-opening Circling Raven Collegiate (Sept. 13-14), leads the tournament by four shots over Medina heading into the final 18 holes. Kimura carded rounds of 72-76 on Monday to finish at (+6) 148.

"Kylie really battled today," said Matador head coach Bonnie Murphy. "She had a little rough stretch but kept it steady and really fought for her scores."

Medina sits second after rounds of 77-75 left her at (+10) 152. Medina and Kimura each finished at even par on the par fives on Monday to lead the tournament.

Margo Dionisio and Ellen Krausse are also in the hunt as both are currently tied for 11th at (+15) 157. Both Dionisio and Krausse posted identical rounds of 78-79 on Monday and open Tuesday just nine shots behind Kimura.

Senior Ashlee Nagamine, who was 11th in this tournament a year ago, is tied for 13th at (+16) 158 after rounds of 81-77. Nagamine finished Monday's two rounds as the tournament scoring leader on par fours with a three over-par total.

Scores were generally higher in the afternoon round due to a 30-mph wind.

"I'm really proud of how all the girls played today," said Murphy. "The conditions were tough."
