ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Junior Ashlee Nagamine fired a tournament record 66 in the final round and the Cal State Northridge women's golf team claimed its third straight tournament win with a one-shot victory at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly InvitationaL at Cypress Ridge G.C.
Nagamine, who was tied for 14th after an opening round 76, blistered the Cypress Ridge course with a final round 66 which is a Cypress Ridge women's course record, a tournament record as well as a Cal State Northridge single-round record. She defeated Cal Poly's Maddy Fletcher by one shot to earn individual medalist honors for the second straight tournament. Nagamine also won the Aztec Fall Classic on Oct. 13 and now has two top-10 finishes and a pair of top-20 finishes in four fall tournaments. Tuesday saw Nagamine shoot a round that included six birdies and no bogeys.
As a team, the Matadors fired rounds of 298-293 (591) to defeat Northern Arizona (592) by a single stroke. Xavier, the first round leader, wound up third at 602, followed by Sacramento State (603) and host Cal Poly (611) rounded out the top-five in the 16-team field.
Besides Nagamine and Fletcher, no other golfer broke par for 36 holes. Stephanie Kim and Meghan Brenner, both of Northern Arizona, finished tied for third place with 146 totals.
Freshman Margo Dionisio was also solid for the Matadors as she finished tied for seventh at (+4) 148 after posting rounds of 73-75. Dionisio had one of four eagles in the tournament. Maurissa Medina closed out an impressive fall tying for 21st at (+9) 153 after rounds of 77-76 and Lady Samson finished tied for 30th at (+13) 157 after rounds of 81-76. Freshman Clariss Guce, who was tied for third after an opening round even-par 72, struggled to a final round 87 and wound up tied for 36th at (+15) 159. Sarah Windsor also competed as an individual and finished tied for 43rd at (+16) 160 after rounds of 82-78.
The Matadors completed an impressive fall portion of the 2009-2010 schedule as Northridge won the Firestone Grill Invitational (Oct. 5-6), the Aztec Fall Classic (Oct. 19-20) and the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational after finishing fourth at the season opening Bulldog and Eagle Invitational in Spokane, Wash.
