Penalty Kick Dooms Northridge in 1-0 Loss to New Mexico

The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-4) lost 1-0 to New Mexico Friday evening in a non-conference match at Matador Soccer Field. The Lobos' Jennifer Williams had the only goal in the game, successfully converting a penalty kick in the 39th minute of action.

With the game scoreless, CSUN's Leandra Walker was whistled for handling the ball in the penalty area and Williams calmly knocked in her third goal of the season.

Other than the penalty kick, the game was a defensive stalemate that appeared headed for a draw. CSUN finished with five shots to New Mexico's 11 and the Matadors had the only two corner kicks of the game. There were no cautions and just one offsides call, against CSUN, in the 90 minutes of action.

Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo finished with two saves in the defeat. New Mexico's Kelli Cornell had three saves to finish with the clean sheet. Melissa Fernandez, Chloe McDaniel and Hannah Wissler all had shots on goal for the Matadors.

The Matadors return to action Sunday with a non-conference matinee Princeton. Kick from Matador Soccer Field is slated for 1 p.m. All CSUN Alumni Association Members receive free admission for themselves and one guest.
