NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (1-0) defeated Arizona State 1-0 Friday evening in both team's 2012 season opener. Senior Stephanie Galarze scored her third career goal in the 10th minute off a cross from freshman Lyndsey Preston as the Matadors won their first game over a Pac-12 opponent since 1999.
The game's only goal came on the counter for the Matadors, who won their first season opener since the 2008 season. Following an ASU free kick, Melissa Fernandez fed a pass up the right flank for Preston. She then dropped in a diagonal ball over the top of the defense that Galarze chipped over the Sun Devil goalkeeper.
The goal was the second of Galarze's career and her first since the 2010 season. Preston picked up an assist in her first career appearance in a Matador uniform. For Fernandez, the assist was the 11th of her career and moved her into fourth place in school history.
In net, senior Cynthia Jacobo made five saves to post her 23rd career victory and 17th career shutout. She made her biggest stop of the season in the second half, denying ASU an equalizer midway through the second half.
In all, CSUN finished with 10 shots compared to 21 for ASU. The Matadors were whistled for 24 fouls during the match and Nicole Cruz, Leandra Walker and Taylor Hobson all saw the yellow card. ASU had 11 fouls and one yellow card.
The win was CSUN's first over a Pac-10/Pac-12 opponent since a 3-1 decision over Oregon on October 3, 1999. The Matadors are now 16-10 in 1-0 games since the start of the 2009 season.
Northridge returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 19 with a contest at the University of San Diego. Kickoff between the Matadors and Toreros is slated for 1 p.m.
