Matadors Collect Multiple Awards on 2012 All-Big West Conference Team
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge women's soccer program collected two individual awards and placed six student-athletes on the 2012 All-Big West Conference Team. Senior Cynthia Jacobo won her second-straight Goalkeeper of the Year award while junior Chloe McDaniel was named Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Jacobo and McDaniel on the First Team was senior Melissa Fernandez while senior Stephanie Galarze received Second Team honors and senior Katie Russ and Freshman Taylor Hobson earned Honorable Mention.
The Matadors, who earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big West Tournament, placed six on the All-Big West Team for the second-straight year.
Jacobo won her second-straight Goalkeeper of the Year award after going 9-4-6 in the regular season and led the conference in shutouts (9), goals-against-average (0.51) and save percentage (.906). Over her four years as a Matador, Jacobo has totaled a school-record 31 wins while ranking sixth in Big West history with 25 career shutouts and ninth in saves with 272.
One of her center backs throughout the season was McDaniel, who earned All-Big West First Team honors in addition to her Defenisve Player of the Year award. McDaniel, a team captain who recently was named the Big West's Defensive Player of the Week, has started all 19 contests and has played nearly every minute in 2012. She scored two goals and had an assist during the nine-game league schedule.
Fernandez was the third Matador to earn First Team honors. The senior from Granada Hills, Calif., leads the Matadors with six goals, five assists and 17 points on the season. She had five goals and two assists against league opposition and ranks second in school history with 15 career assists. She has also set a school record in shots and ranks among the school's all-time top 10 in goals and points as well.
Galarze received Second Team honors after posting four goals and nine points during her senior season. She started off the year on fire, scoring the game-winning goal over Arizona State and adding another tally at San Diego during the opening weekend of the season. In conference play, Galarze scored the game-tying goal against Cal Poly and added a goal against Pacific.
Russ was another defensive stalwart for the Matador defense throughout the season. She started all 19 matches during the regular season and was an important part of a defense that ranks among the top units in all of Division I. This is the second-straight season Russ has earned All-Big West honors.
Rounding out CSUN's awards was Hobson's Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team awards. The freshman has been a mainstay in midfield for the Matadors throughout the 2012 season. She scored two game-winning goals during the conference season, helping lift the Matadors to road victories at UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State.
CSUN returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 1 in a Big West Conference Semifinal against Cal Poly at Anteater Stadium. Kickoff between the Matadors and Mustangs is slated for 5 p.m.
