NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Looking to defend their 2012 Big West Conference Championship, the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team and head coach Keith West have announced the Matadors' 2013 schedule. CSUN will play a total of 19 contests in the fall of 2013 and Northridge will host a total of 10 matches at Matador Soccer Field.
"Our goal every year is go out and assemble a tough non-conference schedule to prepare us for Big West play," West said. "We have a solid group of returning players and exciting mix of newcomers and I am excited to see how they respond to the challenge."
In all, the Matadors will face four teams in 2013 that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Tournament: UCLA, Arizona State, Texas Tech and Long Beach State. Additionally, CSUN will square off with 10 programs that finished the 2012 season ranked among the top 101 in the RPI.
The non-conference portion features four matches with Pac-12 opponents and three against West Coast Conference foes. For the second-straight year, Northridge will play a home-and-home series with San Diego.
Additionally, after having played at Texas, Baylor and Texas A&M in recent campaigns, the Matadors will return to the Lone Star State to square off with Texas Tech in Lubbock. Hailing from the Big 12 Conference, the Red Raiders finished the 2012 season 16-6-1 and with an RPI of 21.
Northridge open the season in August with a home exhibition against Seattle on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. under the lights at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN plays its next four contests on the road (at Arizona State, at UCLA, at USC and at San Diego) before returning home for a Sept. 6 match against Houston at 7:30 p.m.
Following the Cougars, CSUN will make the trip to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech. They'll return from Texas to play four of their next five at home. On Sept. 12, the Matadors host Oregon State and after a trip to Fresno State on Sept. 15, return to the San Fernando Valley to face Tulsa, San Diego, and LMU.
October brings the start of the Big West Conference season. CSUN starts on the road with league matches at UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors then host Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara before setting off for Northern California to meet UC Davis.
The end of October brings perennial rivals Long Beach State and UC Irvine to Matador Soccer Field for a pair of contests. The Matadors wrap up the regular season with a trip to Hawai'i on Nov. 1.
The Big West Tournament, featuring the top four teams after the conclusion of the regular season, will take place on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. The semifinals will take place on Nov. 7 and the championship match will be held on Nov. 10.
As a team, CSUN returns 17 letter winners from a 2012 squad that finished 11-5-6 overall and captured the program's first Big West Championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
Anchoring the team are seniors and team captains Chloe McDaniel and Amanda Smith. McDaniel, a center back from Palmdale, Calif., was the 2012 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned NSCAA All-West Region honors. Smith, a fifth-year senior from Camarillo, Calif., has totaled seven assists without missing a game in her previous three seasons.
"Chloe and Amanda are fantastic leaders who have been key members of the success this program has had. They and the other seniors are strongly motivated to have a successful season in their final year," West said.
