Matadors Host Cougars before Traveling to Meet Red Raiders

The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-4) hosts the University of Houston in its 2013 home opener on Friday, September 6 as part of a CSUN soccer doubleheader with the men's program. The Matadors and Cougars are slated for a kick off of approximately 7:30 p.m. as the teams will play following the CSUN men's squad's contest vs. San Diego. Friday will also feature a free Matador Fan Fest on the adjoining Intramural fields that will run from 4-7 p.m.

Following the contest with Houston, CSUN hits the road again. This trip will take the Matadors on their seemingly annual trip to the state of Texas. On Sunday, Sept. 8, CSUN travels to Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Kick off for the contest, the first ever between the two schools in women's soccer, is slated for 1 p.m. (CT) // 11 a.m. (PT).

Both contests will feature live stats and the Red Raiders' contest will have live video available for a fee. Fans are also encouraged to check with the CSUN athletic department's official Twitter account (@GoMatadors) for in-game updates throughout the weekend.

Last week, CSUN lost to USC and San Diego in a pair of tough road matches. However, the Matadors scored their first two goals of the season last weekend and actually out-shot the Toreros (12-9) in their first meeting this season with USD. Against the Women of Troy, senior Chloe McDaniel scored on a penalty kick in the second half. Two days later, freshman Breanna McCallum tallied her first career goal by finishing off a cross from senior Amanda Smith.

This week offers the Matadors their first opportunity to play at Matador Soccer Field and in front of their home fans. In fact, the match with the Cougars represents a streak in which five of the Matadors' next seven contests will be at home. Since 2010, CSUN is 18-10-3 (.629) in home matches at Matador Soccer Field.

Houston makes the trip to California owning a 1-1-1 record through two weekends of play. The Cougars won their season opener 2-1 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi but then lost 2-0 to Georgia and tied Stephen F. Austin 0-0 in a pair of home matches. Kayla Walker and Kylie Cook have the goals while Sydney George and Cami Koski have split time in net with Koski earning the shutout vs. SFA.

Two days later, CSUN squares off with Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders, who will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday,  are 3-1 on the season after a dramatic loss to Long Beach State last weekend. The 49ers scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left in regulation to hand the Red Raiders their first blemish of the campaign. Texas Tech features four players with two goals already and another four who have scored once. Victoria Esson has started all four matches in net and has made three saves.

Upon their return from Texas, the Matadors will face their fourth Pac-12 opponent of the young season in the Oregon State Beavers.  CSUN and OSU will square off on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. Three days later, CSUN is back out on the road again, this time for a match at Fresno State. The Matadors and Bulldogs will play on Sunday, Sept. 15 with kick off slated for 1 p.m.
