Matadors Finish Time in Las Vegas at UNLV Lousiville Slugger Desert Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (0-10) lost twice Saturday, to No. 25 LSU and Hawai'i, and to Utah Sunday to wrap up its time at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Leann Lopez had a nice weekend for Northridge, hitting her first career double and picking up a two-hit performance against the Rainbow Wahine.

Facing their fourth ranked team of the young season, Northridge mustered just one hit, a Crystal Maas single, in the loss to No. 25 LSU. The Bengal Tigers scored two in the first, four in the third and five in the fifth off CSUN pitching to come away with an 11-0 victory. Mia Pagano was the losing pitcher for the Matadors.

In the nightcap against a future Big West Conference opponent, Hawai'i, the Matadors finished with five hits but ultimately lost 8-0 in six innings. The Rainbow Wahine scored six runs in the fourth and added one in both the first and sixth. One of Lopez's two hits was her first career double.  Maas took the loss in the circle for Northridge.

Sunday, the Matadors squared off with Pac 12 member Utah. Northridge jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Lopez led off the game with a single and moved to second a sac bunt by Abby Linn. Carlsen then brought Lopez home with her second double of the weekend and 28th of her career.

Northridge added to its lead during the next at bat when Carlsen stole third and then came home on a throwing error by the catcher.

The lead was short lived as the Utes got three runs in the top of the second, third in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth.

Northridge could not comeback and in Utah scored another four runs in the top of the sixth to end the contest. Pagano took the loss for CSUN in the circle.

The Matadors' next game will be a fundraiser with the NPF's USSSA Pride. First pitch on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Matador Diamond is slated for 1 p.m. Both teams are expected to participate in an autograph session following the game.
