CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (1-14) concluded its time at the 2012 Cathedral City Classic. In their two games Sunday, the Matadors lost 7-0 to No. 1 California and 7-1 to San Diego State. Mikayla Thielges had CSUN's only RBI on the day, giving her a team-leading eighth on the season.
Against the top-ranked Golden Bears of the Pac-12 Conference, the Matadors managed to forced Cal to have to go to their ace Jolene Henderson for the final five innings. However, once she entered the game, she had four strikeouts and allowed one hit and two walks.
Mia Pagano made the start in the circle and did a good job keeping the Golden Bears off the scoreboard until a two-out RBI single in the sixth. Cal added six runs in the sixth, but only three of the runs scored affected Pagano's ERA. She finished with four walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
In the nightcap against future Big West member San Diego State, CSUN had five hits off Bailey Micetich, including Tanna Bindi's first double of the season. Northridge's only run came in the top of the third, a two-out bloop single that Thielges dropped into left field.
Pagano once again performed admirably in the circle. She started and went five innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs (two unearned) with three strikeouts. Crystal Maas and Alexa Limon pitched the sixth inning for Northridge.
Next week, the Matadors head South to compete in the San Diego Classic I tournament. All the Matador games will be played at the Santee Sportsplex in Santee, Calif. Northridge will face Fresno State, BYU, Utah State, Nevada and San Diego over the three days (Mar. 2-4).
