NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (4-16) lost 3-2 to San Diego Sunday afternoon in Santee Calif., at the San Diego Classic I. The Matadors jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Toreros tied things in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to take the contest.
Riding a three-game winning streak into the contest, the Matadors scored twice in the top of the third. Madeline Sale and Mikayla Thielges were both hit by a pitch and Jaci Carlsen drew a walk in between to start the inning. An error by the center fielder during Alyssa Ray's at-bat allowed one run to score.
However, with the bases loaded and no outs, CSUN managed just a one-out RBI single off the bat of Jessica Fridwall. The threat ended with back-to-back strikeouts.
San Diego got one run back in the bottom of the third, but also left the bases loaded at the end of the inning.
In the fifth, Thielges was hit by a pitch again and Ray singled to start the inning. A sac bunt by Leann Lopez put runners on second and third with one out, but CSUN could not bring either home and eventually left the bases loaded at the end of the inning.
CSUN got the leadoff runner aboard in the seventh, but she stayed there to end the game. Jenny Lahitte was the winner for USD, going 5.0 innings of relief work with nine strikeouts and two hits allowed.
Mia Pagano took the loss in the circle for the Matadors. She went 3.2 innings of relief with four hits, two runs and a strikeout. Alexa Limon went the first 2.1 innings for Northridge, allowing three hits and one earned run with a strikeout.
Next week, CSUN opens its 2012 home schedule with the Northridge Classic. From Mar. 9-11, the Matadors will host CSU Bakersfield, Maine, Harvard and Oregon State at Matador Diamond.
