NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (5-12) lost 4-3 in 10 innings to Saint Mary's in its final game at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. CSUN scored an early run and took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Matadors could not protect the lead and ultimately fell in extra frames to the Gaels.
That one run held up for the Matadors until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the tying run on third, CSUN pitcher Shelly Tait (3-3) had a fielding error that allowed the tying run to score.
Both the Matadors and Gaels scored in the eighth and then were shutout in the ninth. In the 10th, Mikayla Thielges laced a two-out, RBI double to left to score Abby Linn and give the Matadors a 3-2 advantage.
However, the bottom of the 10th saw Saint Mary's string together a two-out triple and single to win the game.
Tait tossed all 9.2 innings for the Matadors. She allowed just one earned run and eight hits to go with a season-high seven strikeouts.
Thielges and Linn each doubled and had a stolen base in the contest. The two teams combined for nine sacrifice bunts.
CSUN returns to action with six games at the Eller Media Stadium Invitational on the campus of UNLV. From Mar. 1-3, the Matadors will face New Mexico State and UNLV once and DePaul and Weber State twice.
