Matadors Edged 1-0 at Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (15-24, 1-6 Big West) lost 1-0 to Long Beach State Wednesday in a Big West Conference game at the 49ers Softball Complex. Crystal Maas and Tanna Bindi each had two hits for the Matadors, but an unearned run scored in the bottom of the third proved to be decisive.
On a windy day in Long Beach, the only run scored with two outs on an infield single. Korinne Randazzo made a diving stop to keep the ball on the dirt behind second base, but then fired to an unoccupied first and the ball sailed down the right field line.
A 49er on second came around to score on the error for the winning run. That spoiled a nice effort from CSUN starter Shelly Tait (6-9). She allowed three hits and four walks in 4.1 innings of work. Alexa Limon went the final 1.2 for CSUN, allowing just one hit.
Northridge had its chances, out-hitting LBSU 5-4 for the game. Bindi and Maas both singled in the third, but a double play ended the threat.
In the fifth and with Jennifer Tyler on first and two outs, Maas just missed a home run to straight center and the ball caromed off the wall. However, Tyler was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
With two outs in the sixth, Mikayla Thielges drew a walk. Following a lengthy at-bat, Sydney House laced her eighth double of the season down the line, but Thielges was unable to score on the play and remained at third. The next batter grounded out to second to end the rally.
CSUN returns to action Saturday, April 13 with a home doubleheader against Cal Poly at Matador Diamond. First pitch is slated for noon.
