NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (17-25, 3-7 Big West) lost 2-1 to Cal Poly Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Big West series at Matador Diamond. Freshman Maylynn Mitchell had an RBI single and sophomore Crystal Maas tossed five innings of solid relief, but a solo home run in the top of the second provided the Mustangs with the decisive run.
On an overcast day in the San Fernando Valley, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Cal Poly collected two hits and a scored on a sac fly off CSUN starter Brianna Elder (2-3).
The Matadors answered quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Korinne Randazzo was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second a sac bunt by Tiffini Lucero. With two outs, Mitchell brought her home with an RBI single.
However, the Mustangs answered with what proved to be the winning run in the top of the second. Whitley Gerhart blasted a solo home run over the left-field wall.
Elder finished the inning, but took the loss after allowing two earned runs in two innings. Maas replaced her in the circle and allowed just one hit and two walks and five innings of work.
CSUN nearly rallied for it second walk-off win in as many days over the Mustangs. In the bottom of the seventh, Madalyne Handy started the inning with a single and was replaced by a pinch runner.
Abby Linn then beat out a sac bunt to appear to put two runners on with no outs. However, the pinch runner was caught too far off the base and tagged out for the first out of the inning.
A strikeout brought Maas to the plate with two outs and she singled to extend the inning. However, the next Matador lined out sharply to third base to end the game.
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, April 17 with a doubleheader at Long Beach State. The games will be broadcast live on ESPNU starting at 1 p.m.
