NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Cal State Northridge sophomore Adrienne Martinez has been named the Big West Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Martinez collected her first career RBI and double in the Matadors' first win over UC Riverside and then added two home runs and six RBIs in the series finale.
Originally from Granada Hills, Calif., Martinez took full advantage of the first three starts of her career. She batted .400 with a 1.100 slugging percentage as the Matadors won all three games with the Higlanders, their first series sweep of a Big West opponent since the 2010 season.
In the series opener, Martinez went 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Although she went 0-for-4 in the second game, she reached on an error in a five-run fifth inning in which CSUN came back from a 5-2 deficit.
Finally, in the series finale, Martinez unloaded for two home runs and six RBIs. She became the 27th Matador in program history to hit two home runs in a game and her six RBIs was one shy of tying the school record.
"It feels great to receive this honor. Throughout the series, I was just trying to make good contact and move runners," Martinez said. "It is exciting not only to get the opportunity, but then to also excel and produce for my team."
Her head coach, Tairia Flowers, was happy to see Martinez thrive when presented with the opportunity.
"We are very excited for Adrienne. She has played a lot of roles to make us better as a team," Flowers said. "For her to have that kind of impact when given the opportunity speaks volumes to her character."
In getting the sweep over UCR, Northridge has now won 14 more games that it did in the 2012 season. At 10-11 in the Big West, the Matadors have doubled their league wins from a year ago.
Martinez and the Matadors will conclude Big West play this weekend with a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors will play a doubleheader on Friday, May 10 starting at 4 p.m., followed by a single game at noon on Saturday, May 11.
