CSUN Softball Closes 2013 Season with Series at Fullerton

Northridge Ventures to Orange County to Square Off with Titans
The Cal State Northridge softball team (24-29,10-11 Big West Conference) closes out the 2013 season with a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors and Titans will play a doubleheader at Anderson Field on Friday, May 10 beginning at 4 p.m., and then play a single game on Saturday, May 11 at noon. Last week CSUN posted a three-game sweep of UC Riverside at Matador Diamond, its first Big West Conference series sweep since the 2010 season. In the game one victory, sophomore Jennifer Tyler blasted a three-run home run to break a 1-1 tie and send the Matadors to a 5-1 victory. In game two, Northridge rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-5. Finally in the series finale on Sunday, sophomore Adrienne Martinez blasted a pair of home runs, two of four Northridge deep flies in the contest, as the Matadors took a 12-5 decision.
For her efforts, Martinez earned Big West Conference Player of the Week. With three games left on the docket, Northridge now has 24 wins in 2013, 14 more than it had in all of the 2012 season. At 10-11 in the Big West Conference, the Matadors have doubled their league win total from a year ago and have won three league series.
The Titans represent the Matadors' final opponent of the 2013 season. Cal State Fullerton is 26-27 overall and 11-10 in the Big West Conference. The Titans are 10-2 over their last 12 games with the only losses coming in a Big West series at UC Davis.
At the plate, CSUF is batting .259 as a team for the season. Carissa Turang leads the squad with a .312 batting average for the season. She has a team-high three triples and has scored 15 runs on the season. Junior Ariel Tsuchiyama is batting .310 with nine doubles, 22 RBIs and 21 walks while Eliza Crawford (.302) and Gabby Aragon have combined for 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs.
In the circle, freshman Jasmine Antunez leads the club with a 16-12 record. She sports a 2.67 ERA, 165 strikeouts and a .219 opponent batting average in 186.1 innings of work. Desiree Ybarra won all three games against Pacific last week and is now 9-12 on the season with a 2.95 ERA, 42 K's and a .307 opponent batting average in 111.2 innings of work. In Big West play, opponents have batted .258 off CSUF pitching.
Senior Send Off
Saturday's contest at Cal State Fullerton represents the final game in the Matador careers of six members of the 2013 squad: Tiffini Lucero, Alexa Limon, Mia Pagano, Korinne Randazzo, Shelly Tait and Mikayla Thielges.
Over the course of their Matador careers, the six have been a part of historical and memorable moments on the diamond. Thielges and Pagano are both four-year letterwinners who have earned All-Big West honors during their careers. Thielges will leave CSUN ranked among the school's all-time leaders in home runs and RBIs while Pagano has racked up 19 career wins entering the weekend.
In two years with the program, Lucero, Limon, Tait and Randazzo have all had profound impacts for CSUN. Tait leads the team in the circle at 12-11 and has picked up wins over Long Beach State, LMU and Pacific this season. Limon earned her first career win at UCSB and owns a 1.75 ERA in 32 innings this year. At the plate, Randazzo leads the team with 32 runs, 16 stolen bases and 12 sac bunts this year while adding a .305 average. Finally Lucero is second on the squad with 10 sac bunts, hit her first home run in a win over Cal Poly and has five stolen bases this season.
