Matadors Fall 8-2 to Titans in Season Finale

FULLERTON, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (25-31, 11-13 Big West) lost 8-2 to Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon in the Matadors' final game of the 2013 season. Abby Linn and Tiffini Lucero each had RBI base hits for the Matadors, but a seven-run Titan fifth was too much to overcome.

On a stiflingly hot day in Orange County, CSUN looked to spoil Cal State Fullerton's senior day. The Matadors looked on their way to perhaps doing so through three innings of play.

The teams were tied 1-1 through four and a half innings of play. Linn singled with the bases loaded in the top of the second to match a lone Titan run in the bottom of the first.

However, things unravelled for Northridge in the bottom of the fifth. The Titans sent 13 to the plate in the inning and two Matador errors compounded matters. In all, the Titans scored seven in the frame.

Not to be outdone, the Matadors were actually the final team to score Saturday. In the top of the seventh, having avoided a mercy-rule defeat, senior Korinne Randazzo blasted a double off the wall in left field and then scored on an RBI single from Lucero.

Randazzo finished the season with eight doubles and a team-high 34 runs and 16 stolen bases. Lucero added 14 runs scored, three doubles and five RBIs on the season.

In the circle, Mia Pagano (9-9) took the loss for the Matadors. The senior allowed eight runs, though only three were earned. She added three strikeouts in her final career appearance.

The game also marked the final career appearance for seniors Mikayla Thielges and Alexa Limon. Thielges finished her career sixth in school history in both career home runs (28) and RBIs (102).

Although CSUN ends the year on a somewhat sour note, the team took outstanding strides in the 2013 season. The team won 15 more games overall and had six more league wins than it did in 2012. At the plate, CSUN smashed 30 more doubles (65-35) than it had last year and hit more home runs (23-21) than its opponents.
