Matadors Down Colorado State to Wrap Up Weekend at Kajikawa Classic
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (3-2) defeated Colorado State 4-2 Sunday afternoon in its final game in Tempe, Ariz., as part of the Kajikawa Classic. Maylynn Mitchell blasted her second home run of the weekend and Brianna Elder tossed her second complete-game victory of the weekend to help lift the Matadors past the Rams.
The CSUN offense was at full tilt in Sunday's finale. The Matadors cranked out 13 hits in the win vs. Colorado State with Abby Linn, Taylor Glover and Taylor Nate, Kaitlin Toerner and Mitchell each collecting two hits.
After going 143 at-bats without a home run in her freshman season, Mitchell blasted her second of the weekend in the top of the second to give CSUN a 2-0 lead. In the first, Glover scored on an RBI single from Crystal Maas after reaching on a fielder's choice.
In the third inning, CSUN extended its lead to 3-0 after Linn scored on an RBI single from Tanna Bindi. Linn finished the weekend batting .529 with nine base hits and two runs scored. CSUN added a fourth run in the sixth inning when Toerner scored on a single from Glover.
That was enough offense for Elder (2-0), who allowed just one earned run to go with six hits. She fanned four and ended the weekend with a 1.75 ERA in 16 innings of work.
As a team, CSUN batted .329 during its five games at the Kajikawa Classic. Toerner led the squad with a .750 average while Katie Hooper (.438) and Glover (.421) also enjoyed stellar opening weekends at the plate.
Northridge returns to action next weekend with five games in Las Vegas, Nev., as part of the Easton Classic.
