NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (6-5) defeated New Mexico 5-2 in its first game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., at Big League Dreams Park. Brianna Elder tossed a complete game and the Matador offense collected 10 base hits to lead Northridge past the Lobos.
Entering the week with a team batting average of .302 through 10 games, CSUN continued to hit the ball well in defeating the Lobos. Friday afternoon, Maylynn Mitchell, Kaitlin Toerner and Taylor Glover all collected two hits for CSUN.
After New Mexico struck for an unearned run in the top of third, the Matadors responded with three in their half of the frame. Mitchell started the inning with a single and then moved to second on a sac bunt by Tanna Bindi.
Toerner then drove Mitchell home with a single up the middle and a single by Abby Linn brought up Glover, who drove home Toerner with a single as well. Katie Hooper recorded her team-leading 11th RBI of the season by then bringing home Linn with an RBI single.
CSUN added two more runs in its half of the fifth. Glover started things with a single and quickly stole second, her team-leading third steal of the year. After Glover moved to third on a groundout, Crystal Maas brought her home with an RBI single. Leann Lopez pinch-ran for Maas and scored on an RBI single by Madison Fleming.
Although New Mexico connected for a solo home run in the sixth, Elder (5-2) kept the Lobos' offense at bay Friday. The junior allowed four hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts in the seven-inning performance.
CSUN returns to the diamond Saturday with a pair of games at The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Matadors face No. 12 Texas A&M and Long Island-Brooklyn Saturday and then face Oklahoma State and UNLV on Sunday, Feb. 23.
