CSUN Softball Squares Off with Utah State in Wednesday Doubleheader
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team and its 13-9 record, which includes victories in seven of its last eight contests, hosts Utah State Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Matador Diamond starting at 1 p.m. CSUN is off to a 6-1 start at home and carries a 9-1 record in contests decided by 2 or less runs in the 2014 season.
Last weekend, CSUN went 4-1 at Matador Diamond and scored victories over Grand Canyon (twice), Georgetown and Oregon State.
Junior Brianna Elder continued her stellar start to the season by picking up three victories over the weekend to raise her season record to 10-3. She is tied for the league lead in wins and also ranks among the league leaders in ERA (2.29), strikeouts (72) and innings pitched (76.1).
Freshman Daphne Pofek recorded the first win of her career with a strong performance against Georgetown. The rookie is 1-3 with a 4.88 ERA in 33 innings this season.
Offensively, freshman Taylor Glover batted over .400 in the five games last weekend and collected her first two career triples and four stolen bases. For the season, the rookie is batting .397 with a team-high 27 hits and nine stolen bases. She also has six extra-base hits, 17 runs and 14 RBIs.
Kaitlin Toerner continues to lead the team with a .415 average on the season. A junior transfer from Bakersfield College, Toerner also has nine runs, four sacrifice bunts and three RBIs on the season.
Fellow junior Abby Linn checks in at .356 for the year with 13 runs, 26 hits and four extra-base hits. Another rookie, Katie Hooper, leads the Matadors with 15 RBIs while another first-year player, Taylor Nate, has three home runs and 12 RBIs on the season.
Utah State is currently 5-7 and plays at Bakersfield on Tuesday, March 11 in a single game. Through 12 games, Victoria Saucedo is batting a team-high .417 and also leads the club with three home runs, 11 runs and 15 hits. As a team, Utah State is hitting .243 with a .350 on-base percentage.
In the circle, Noelle Johnson is 4-5 with a 3.72 ERA with 65 K's in 52. 1 innings of work. As a staff, the Aggies carry a 4.61 ERA in 12 games and 76 innings of work.
Steve Johnson is in his first season as the head coach at Utah State. The Matadors lead the all-time series with Utah State 29-20 and are 14-8 at home against the Aggies.
Following the two games with Utah State, CSUN heads to LMU for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15. First pitch is slated for noon.
