NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (24-14, 2-3 Big West) defeated UC Davis 5-1 before falling to the Aggies in the nightcap 5-4 Saturday in a Big West Conference doubleheader at Matador Diamond. Brianna Elder tossed a complete game and Kaitlin Toerner had two RBIs in the game one victory. In game two, the Matadors nearly mounted a late rally, but left the tying run on third to end the game.

Game One Recap

Brianna Elder improved to 16-6 on the season to help lift CSUN to a 5-1 victory over UC Davis. She scattered five hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts. She lowered her season ERA to 1.99 in 133.2 innings and the complete game was her 14th of the season.

At the plate, Kaitlin Toerner went 2-for-3 and tied a career high with two RBIs. Four other Matadors had a hit, including Taylor Nate, who hit her third double of the season. Abby Linn stole her sixth base of the season in the win.

UC Davis struck for a two-out RBI single in the first to claim an early lead. The Matadors then scored twice in the second and twice in the third to take the lead for good. Toerner had a bases-loaded single and Taylor Glover earned an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the second. In the third, Nate had an RBI double and she scored on an RBI single by Maylynn Mitchell.

CSUN added a run in the fifth. Toerner delivered a two-out single to score Madalyne Handy. Toerner now has seven RBIs to go with a .392 batting average on the year.

Game Two Recap

UC Davis' Alicia Paine retired 14-straight Matadors and survived a seventh-inning rally to lift the Aggies to a 5-4 win over the Matadors.

Paine, who replaced Marissa Chapa in the third inning, allowed three hits (all in the bottom of the seventh with two outs) and two earned runs to record her first win of the season.

Still, CSUN nearly came all the way back in that seventh inning. With two outs, Toerner and Linn reached on infield singles. Glover then delivered a two-run triple, her fifth of the season, to bring CSUN within 5-4. However, the next batter flew out to right field to end the game.

CSUN led 2-1 early in the game. Glover scored on an RBI groundout from Katie Hooper in the first and then worked a bases-loaded walk in the second.

However, UCD's Lauryn Saunders launched a two-run home run in the top of the third off CSUN starter Jordan Sauceda to give the Aggies the lead for good. Sauceda fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts in three innings of work.

The Aggies added a pair of runs on Daphne Pofek in the fifth. She had two strikeouts in four innings of work Saturday.

Glover finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base in game two. She is batting .402 with 35 RBIs and 15 stolen bases on the season.

The Matadors and Aggies will battle for the series Sunday at Matador Diamond. First pitch is slated for noon.
