NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
After allowing just one earned run in 14 innings to help lead the Cal State Northridge softball team to a series victory over UC Davis, junior Brianna Elder earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors the league office announced Monday. Elder went 2-0 with two complete game victories and did not allow a run over her final 13 innings of work against the Aggies.
A redshirt junior from Concord, Calif., Elder helped lift CSUN to its first series victory over UC Davis since 2009 with two strong outings in the circle. She allowed a two-out RBI single in the first inning of a game one doubleheader on Saturday. After that she did not allow another UC Davis over her next 13 innings.
In the game one victory, Elder went seven innings and allowed five hits to go with the run. She also finished with four strikeouts. In Sunday's finale, she recorded her second shutout of the season and allowed just four hits over seven innings of work. She added two strikeouts in the victory.
"Sunday, I went out there looking to throw a shutout and knew I had to attack with every pitch. I also got a nice motivating quote from Coach Ball the morning of the game," Elder said. "It is great to receive this award and I want to thank my teammates and coaches for their hard work and help."
For the season, Elder is 17-6 with a 1.89 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 140.2 innings of work. The 17 wins are the most by a Matador pitcher since the 2010 season. Elder ranks second in the Big West in wins, ERA and opponent batting average while checking in at third in innings pitched and strikeouts.
Thus far in league play, Elder is 2-2 with a 1.50 ERA and a .198 opponent batting average in 28 innings of work.
This is the second time this year Elder has earned the conference's weekly pitching award. Earlier this season, she posted victories over Utah State and LMU and picked up her league-leading third save of the season in another victory over the Lions.
Elder and the Matadors return to action Wednesday, April 9 with a doubleheader at Bakersfield starting at 1 p.m. Following the games with the Roadrunners, CSUN resumes Big West play with a home series against UC Santa Barbara. The Matadors and Gauchos will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 and a single game on Sunday, April 13 with both days starting at noon.
