NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (26-17, 3-5 Big West) lost 8-7 and 8-3 Saturday to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference doubleheader at Matador Diamond. Ariana Wassmer hit her second home run of the season and Kaitlin Toerner had a three-hit game in the second contest, but the Gauchos struck early and often in winning the two games.
Both games started with UCSB scoring four runs before CSUN even had a chance to bat. Brianna Elder (18-8) struggled in starting and losing both contests. In the first game, her defense let her down and she lasted less than an inning. In game two, she went 1.2 innings and allowed six runs and four hits.
CSUN totaled five errors in the first contest and only three of the Gauchos' eight runs were earned. Crystal Maas tossed 1.2 inning sand allowed two runs, two hits and two walks. Daphne Pofek tossed the final 4.2 innings of game one and allowed two hits and one unearned run.
Offensively, the Matadors did their best to claw back into the game. CSUN scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and Wassmer blasted her second home run in as many games in the bottom of the third. CSUN got two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not find the tying run.
In game two, UCSB struck for six in the first two innings and never looked back. Pofek relieved Elder and tossed 5.1 innings with five hits, two earned runs and two strikeouts.
Toerner was a perfect 3-for-3 in the loss and she scored a run. Wassmer had a sac fly and Mitchell scored a run on a wild play where her bunt single was thrown into the right field corner and she wheeled all the way around the bases.
CSUN will look to salvage the series Sunday with a noon contest at Matador Diamond.
