Matadors Drop 6-2 Decision to UC Santa Barbara in Series Finale

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (26-18, 3-6 Big West) lost 6-2 to UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. CSUN struck for a pair of runs in the first inning, but UCSB struck for a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth and piled on three insurance runs in the seventh to complete the weekend sweep.

Unlike Saturday, the Matadors struck first in Sunday's contest, scoring twice in the first inning.

Taylor Glover singled to right field and scored on a double from Katie Hooper. The double was Hooper's team-leading ninth of the season. She then came into score on an RBI sac fly from Taylor Nate.

CSUN starting pitcher Daphne Pofek (5-4) kept the Gauchos at bay until the top of the fourth. Stacy Cavazos sent a 3-2, two-out pitch over the left-field wall to give UCSB a 3-2 lead. Pofek went 4.1 innings with nine hits and two stikeouts.

Crystal Maas replaced Pofek in the circle and allowed three runs with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

The Matadors had several chances before the seventh to tie the score but could not find the run. Abby Linn and Maylynn Mitchell had two hits apiece for CSUN.

Shelby Wisdom (14-11) picked up her third complete game win of the weekend for UCSB.

The Matadors return to action Tuesday with non-conference game at nationally ranked UCLA. First pitch from Easton Stadium on the UCLA campus is slated for 3 p.m.

CSUN returns to Big West play on Friday, April 18 with a doubleheader at UC Riverside. That day's action will start at 1:30 p.m.
