Matadors Drop 7-2 Decision to No. 4 UCLA
Feb. 20, 2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (1-8) battled throughout the game, but ultimately fell 7-2 to No. 4 UCLA Saturday night at Easton Stadium. Tracy Allen and Lauren Olivas each had a double for the Matadors and Allen and Alexandria Alvarado each had an RBI.
A day after losing a 9-0 five-inning decision to the Bruins, the Matadors were determined to put up a better fight Saturday. CSUN and UCLA were scoreless after two innings before UCLA scored a run in the third inning.
Northridge rallied in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. Olivas led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Alvarado then drove her home with a sac fly.
However, the bottom of the fourth proved costly to the Matadors. The Bruins chased CSUN starter Mia Pagano and knocked around Debbie Duran for five runs in the frame. Hannah Fraijo was the third Northridge pitcher of the inning and tossed the final three innings of action.
The Matadors added a run in the top of the seventh. Alvarado was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on Allen's RBI double.
Pagano took the loss for CSUN, scattering three hits and three earned runs over her three innings of work. Fraijo gave up just one hit and one earned run in her work Saturday, fanning two Bruins.
Destiny Rodino went four innings with three strikeouts and one earned run to pick up the victory for UCLA.
Northridge concludes its time at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament with a 9 a.m. game against Portland State at UCLA's Easton Stadium. Originally scheduled for 10 a.m., the game was pushed up an hour due to a rain forecast in the area for Sunday.
