Offense Carries Northridge to Sunday Split at DeMarini Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (7-12) earned a split its in final day at the DeMarini Invitational on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Offense carried the way Sunday as the Matadors defeated Southern Miss, 7-3, before falling to No. 14 Stanford, 8-2.
Northridge produced a season-high 14 hits in their win over the Eagles. Jaci Carlsen and Madeline Sale each had three hits and two RBIs. Kristen Mihm and Karla Chaparro each broke out of slumps with two hits and Jennifer Mosier moved into 10th in school history with her 27th career stolen base.
Although the Matadors lost to Stanford for the second time this season, they put together a much better showing Sunday than they did in their first meeting. Mikayla Thielges and Korinne Randazzo blasted back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. The blast was Thiegles' third of the weekend and team-leading sixth of the season.
Southern Miss Recap
The Cal State Northridge offense mashed a season-high 14 hits and the Matadors scored four of the last five innings to post a 7-3 victory over Southern Miss. In the circle, Hannah Fraijo tossed a complete game for Northridge to improve to 5-2 on the season. She scattered 11 hits, she allowed only three runs while striking out two.
The Matadors collected three doubles, two stolen bases and two sac flies in the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 after two innings, CSUN scored twice in the third two take a lead they would not surrender the rest of the game. Karla Chaparro started the rally with a single to left field to start the inning. Jennifer Mosier then beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. Samantha Sloniker moved them up a base with a sac bunt and both came around to score on an RBI single by Carlsen.
In the fourth inning, Northridge added to its lead when Mihm led off the inning by reaching on an error. Mikalya Thielges moved her to second with a sac bunt and a single by Korinne Randazzo put runners on the corner. Chaparro then delivered a Sac Fly to center field to double the Matadors' lead.
CSUN added another run in the fifth inning. Sloniker led off the inning with a single and a double by Carlsen put runners in scoring position with no outs. Madeline Sale then picked up an RBI on a groundout to give Northridge a 4-1 lead.
After Southern Miss drew back a run in the sixth inning, the Matadors scored three more times in the seventh to seal the win. Carlsen led off the inning with a single and Sale brought her home with an RBI double to center. Leann Lopez came in to pinch-run for Sale and scored on an sac fly from Thielges. Finally, Randazzo cranked a double to score Mihm.
Mikayla Thielges and Korinne Randazzo each cranked home runs as the Matadors lost 8-2 to No. 14 Stanford. The pair hit back-to-back shots in the fifth inning to break up a no hitter and shutout by the Cardinal's Teagan Gerhart.
Kristen Mihm added a double for the Matadors and Jennifer Mosier and Madeline Sale drew walks for the Matadors at the plate. Otherwise, Gerhart was tough in the circle, striking out a career-high 14 batters in seven innings.
For Northridge, Carly Wade went 2.1 innings with four earned runs, five hits and three walks to fall to 1-9 on the season. Fraijo tossed the final 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs.
Thiegles batted .400 over the four games in Orange County, cranking three home runs with six RBIs. She also had a sac fly, a sac bunt and posted a 1.300 slugging percentage.
