Big Innings Lift CSUN to Saturday Sweep at The Worth Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (11-8) defeated Portland State, 4-1, and Quinnipiac, 8-0 in five innings, Saturday at The Worth Invitational. Micah Putnam blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning against the Vikings and the Matadors scored five runs in the fifth inning against the Bobcats to end the game.
Putnam's home run was her second of the year and gives her a team-leading 15 RBIs on the season. She also recorded her fifth stolen base of the season on the day, the second-best figure on the team, to go along with a .271 batting average.
In the circle, Amanda Pitzenberger and Hannah Fraijo each recorded a win Saturday. Pitzenberger tossed five innings of one-hit softball in relief against the Vikings for her second win of the season. Fraijo earned the win against the Bobcats, going all five innings while allowing just three hits and fanning four.

The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Portland State, 4-1, Saturday morning at The Worth Invitational held at Matador Diamond. Micah Putnam blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Matadors to the victory.
After PSU scored an unearned run and chased CSUN starter Debbie Duran in the top of the second, Amanda Pitzenberger came in and threw five innings of shutout softball in relief to pick up her second win of the season.
Trailing 1-0 to start the bottom of the sixth, Alexandria Alvarado started the rally by reaching on a fielding error. Christina Saenz was then hit by a pitch and Tracy Allen bunted for a base hit to load the bases. On a 3-1 pitch, Putnam crushed a long drive to right-center, narrowly clearing the fence to give CSUN a 4-1 lead.
Pitzenberger retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to nail down the victory. Krystal Raphael and Kristen Mihm each picked up base hits for CSUN in the victory. Raphael also caught a Viking stealing from her catchers' position.
For the season, Pitzenberger is 2-0 with a 4.20 ERA and four strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work. Nicole Latham took the loss for Portland State.
The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 8-0, in five innings in its second game at The Worth Inviational. Sarah Kahn-Shamout had a two-run double and Hannah Fraijo tossed a three-hit shutout for her second win of the season.
The Matadors scored a run in the first inning, two in the fourth and broke open, and ultimately ended the game, with five in the bottom of the fifth inning. Seven different Matadors scored runs against Quinnipiac and Jaclyn Rymer scored twice.
Kahn-Shamout's two-run double came in a pinch-hitting role in the fourth inning. With two outs, Rymer drew a walk and Kahn-Shamout took to the plate and delivered a crushing blow that flew over the left fielder's head.
In the fifth inning, CSUN scored five times to end the game. Alexandria Alvarado led off the inning with a single and Chrsitina Saenz drew a walk to start off the frame. Following a fielder's choice, Jennifer Moiser pinch-ran for Saenz at second base and Putnam blasted a double to left field, bringing home Mosier while Tracy Allen came all the way around from first to score on a fielding error by the Bobcats.
The rally continued with an RBI double by Jaci Carlsen, bringing Putnam around to score. Krystal Raphael then hit a sharp grounder to the Quinnipiac third basemen who overthrew her first basemen, allowing Carlsen to score. Lauren Olivas then came in to pinch run for Raphael and score the game-ending run on an error by the Bobcat third baseman.
Fraijo faced 19 batters and struck out four. She now stands at 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 32.2 innings of work. Emily Bellush picked up the loss for Quinnipiac.
The Matadors close out The Worth Invitational Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Portland State.
