SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team (17-9) defeated Miami (OH), 5-2, and Iowa State, 2-0, Saturday at the San Diego Classic II. For the second-straight day, Debbie Duran picked up both wins for the Matadors in the circle while Lauren Olivas had two hits and scored two runs for CSUN on the day.
Against the Redhawks, the Matadors jumped out to an early 5-0 lead through two innings. Jaclyn Rymer had three hits, two runs and RBI in the contest and four other Matadors drove in a run. Duran threw a complete game, scattering five hits while striking out two and walking two to earn her 11th win of the season.
In the nightcap against the Cyclones, Northridge scored a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Duran threw 3.1 innings of relief work for the Matadors, allowing no hits and fanning two Cyclones.
Miami (OH) Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Miami (OH), 5-1, at the San Diego Classic II. Jaclyn Rymer was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs and an RBI and Debbie Duran won her 11th game of the season with a complete game effort.
In the first inning, Rymer led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by Alexandria Alvarado.
In the second inning, CSUN tacked on four runs to their lead. Sarah Kahn-Shamout started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt by Krystal Raphael. Lauren Olivas then slapped a single up the middle to bring home Kahn-Shamout. Rymer then laced a double to right-center to score Olivas and Karla Chaparro singled to center to put runners on the corners.
Following a groundout, Christina Saenz singled to bring home Rymer and then stole second base during the next at-bat. Micah Putnam drove in the fourth run of the frame with a single to left field, scoring Chaparro. Saenz was thrown out at third base on the play to end the rally.
Duran earned her 11th win of the season against the Redhawks, fanning two and walking two. She allowed only five hits to Miami hitters, compared to the 11 hits the Matadors wracked up. Meredith Linch picked up the loss for Miami (OH).
Iowa State Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team defeated Iowa State, 2-0, in it second game Saturday at the San Diego Classic II. The Matadors scored a pair of runs in the top of third, enough of a cushion for the pitching tandem of Amanda Pitzenberger and Debbie Duran.
Jaci Carlsen started the rally in the third with a lead-off single in the third and stole second base. Lauren Olivas then recorded an infield single and a throwing error by Iowa State allowed Carlsen to score and move Olivas to second. Following a passed ball, Olivas came in to score on an RBI single by Karla Chaparro.
Pitzenberger made the start for CSUN, going 3.2 innings and allowing five hits while striking out one. Duran came in to relieve her in the fourth inning and tossed 3.1 innings of hitless softball to earn her 12th win of the season.
With the win, CSUN concluded its play against Big 12 opponents with a 5-1 record. Rachel Zabriskie picked up the loss for Iowa State.
The Matadors conclude their stay in San Diego Sunday with a meeting against tournament host San Diego State. First pitch between the Matadors and Aztecs is slated for 2 p.m.
