SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (11-14) defeated Ohio State, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in the San Diego Classic II on the campus of San Diego State. The Matadors hit four home runs and got some outstanding pitching to defeat the Buckeyes.
A day after Northridge had trouble mustering any offense, the bats awoke with fervor against the Buckeyes. Kristen Mihm started the home run barrage with a solo shot in the top of the second, her second home run of the season.
CSUN added three more runs in the top of the third courtesy of the long ball. With two outs, Carlsen ripped her third home of the season and 14th of her career over the center field fence. Mikayla Thielges then drew a walk and Tracy Allen brought her home with a two-run shot to center.
The home run was Allen's fourth of the season and 15th of her career, moving her into a tie for 10th in school history.
Northridge added two more runs in the top ofthe fifth. Korinne Randazzo led off the inning with a triple and scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Carlsen. With two outs in the frame, Thielges blasted her team-leading ninth home run of the season. She also leads the Matadors with 26 RBIs on the year.
Freshmen Madeline Sale and Leann Lopez also had base hits for the Matadors. Senior Jennifer Mosier stole her team-leading ninth stolen base of the season. She now has 30 for her career, moving her into a tie for fifth in school history.
In the circle, Carly Wade picked up the win for CSUN, improving to 3-9 on the season. She tossed 5.0 innings of relief work, giving up four hits and one earned run. Mia Pagano started the game for CSUN, going 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
The Matadors conclude their time in San Diego on Sunday, Mar. 20 with a pair of games on the campus of the University of San Diego. Northridge will face Ohio (9 a.m.) and San Diego (11:30 a.m.).
