Northridge Falls Twice to Long Beach State Saturday

The Cal State Northridge softball team (23-11, 3-2 BWC) dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Long Beach State. The Matadors fell 6-2 in game one and 3-2 in game two to the 49ers.
Debbie Duran took both losses for Northridge in the circle, tossing 9.1 innings of work on the day. She is now 16-7 on the season.
Game One Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team lost game one of a doubleheader against Long Beach State, 6-2, Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped the Matadors' 11-game winning streak as the 49ers managed 11 hits off CSUN starter Debbie Duran.
After both teams stranded a runner on second base in the first inning, Duran got herself out of a major jam in the bottom of the second. A leadoff walk followed by a single gave the 49ers runners on second and third with no outs.
However, Duran got the next two LBSU batters to groundout and strand the runners. With two outs, he 49ers got a hit and a run, but the 49er on second was thrown out at the plate by Lauren Olivas to end the inning.
After LBSU got another run and the Matadors threw another runner out at the plate, CSUN tied the score in the top of the fourth. Alexandria Alvarado led off the frame with a single and moved to second after Christina Saenz drew a walk. Micah Putnam then laid down a sac bunt to move each Matador up a base.
LBSU answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The 49ers scored all of their runs in the inning with two outs and chased Duran. Amanda Pitzenberger took over for CSUN in the circle.
Brooke Turner picked up the win for LBSU, fanning seven while allowing four Matador hits in a complete game. Duran finished with three strikeouts, but was saddled with her sixth loss of the season.
Game Two Recap
The Cal State Northridge softball team dropped the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, 3-2, to Long Beach State. Christina Saenz and Alexandria Alvarado each had an RBI double for the Matadors in the defeat.
The Matadors got to LBSU starter Taylor Petty early, scoring a run in the first inning. Jaclyn Rymer led off the game with a walk and after Karla Chaparro grounded into a fielder's choice, Christina Saenz found the gap in right-center to bring Chaparro home with a two-out double.
Long Beach State evened up the score in the bottom of the second with its own two-out double.
Alexandria Alvarado and CSUN responded with yet another two-out RBI double in the top of the third. With two outs, Karla Chaparro slapped a single through the right side and came around to score when Alvarado found the gap in the left-center.
Again, LBSU managed to draw the score back to even, scoring a run in the bottom of the third. The 49ers got their third two-out RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
Northridge threatened in the top of the sixth. Chaparro was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Alvarado. However, the Matadors would strand her and another runner at the end of the inning.
Petty was able to retire the Matador side in the seventh inning to earn the win. Debbie Duran picked up her second loss of the game in game two, tossing 5.2 innings of relief work and surrendering only one earned run. She is now 16-7 with a 1.78 ERA for the season.
The Matadors and 49ers close out their three-game series Sunday with a single game at 49er Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
