April 19, 2009
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (24-17, 4-8 BWC) lost 8-5 Sunday to No. 22 Cal Poly at Matador Diamond. Alexandria Alvarado and Micah Putnam each had two RBIs and a double on the day for the Matadors.
Putnam finished the weekend hitting .546 against Cal Poly pitching. Sunday, she went 2-for-3 from the plate, collecting her seventh double, 27 and 28th RBIs and eighth stolen base of the season. All three figures represent new career highs for the senior, who is hitting .282 for the year and owns a .969 fielding percentage at second base.
Alvarado picked up her ninth double of the season and went 3-for-4 from the plate Sunday. She also scored a run, bringing her season totals to 17 runs scored an 15 RBIs with a .291 batting average.
The Mustangs used the long ball early, as Anna Cahn, Cal Poly's starting pitcher, blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. CSUN starter Debbie Duran, who took the loss to move to 16-11 on the season, was chased before the end of the inning.
Northridge would respond in the bottom of the second, getting RBIs from Putnam and Raphael. Cal Poly would then strike with four more runs in the top of the third to increase their lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the third, singles by Rymer and Chaparro started the inning and a sac bunt by Christina Saenz put runners on second and third. Alvarado then slapped a double down the left-field line to score them both.
Both teams would add a run in the seventh inning. CSUN threatened in the top of the fifth, putting runners on first and second with one out. Another Mustang error loaded the bases with two outs, but the rally ended without any runs.
Cahn tossed a complete game to pick up the victory. Hannah Fraijo threw the last 6.1 innings of work, allowing five earned runs with two K's.
The Matadors close out their 2009 home schedule next weekend, hosting UC Riverside in a three-game series at Matador Diamond. On Saturday, April 25, the two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon and then play a single game the following day also at noon.
