FULLERTON, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team (27-19, 7-10 BWC) fell in a pair of Big West Conference games at Cal State Fullerton Saturday. The Matadors dropped game one, 8-2, before falling 4-3 in the second contest at Anderson Family Field.
In game one, the Matadors threatened right off the bat. Jaclyn Rymer led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Karla Chaparro. Alexandria Alvarado then drew a walk and with two outs, Christina Saenz dropped a single into left. However, Rymer was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Northridge got on the board in the second inning. Tracy Allen started the frame with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Jaci Carlsen. With one out, Hannah Fraijo helped her cause with an infield single and Lauren Olivas drove in her 10th run of the season with a sac fly to center.
The Titans responded in the bottom of the third, scoring eight runs and chasing Fraijo from the circle. Fullerton sent 13 batters to the plate during the rally, in which Northridge made two errors.
CSUN pulled a run back in the top of the fourth to make the score 8-2. Alvarado smacked her team-leading 10th double of the season in the top of the fifth inning. She now has 27 for her career, tied for the eighth-most in Northridge history.
Fraijo took the loss for Northridge, going 2.2 innings while allowing five hits and three walks. Only three of the eight runs in the Fullerton third were earned on Fraijo. Amanda Pitzenberger tossed the last 3.1 innings for the Matadors, allowing just one hit and one walk.
Ari Cervantes threw a complete game for the Titans to pick up the win. Northridge actually out-hit Fullerton in the first game, 9-6, but could not overcome the Titans' third inning.
In game two, Fullerton got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run.
The Matadors responded in the top of the fourth. With one out, Alexandria Alvarado was hit by a pitch and Micah Putnam followed the at-bat with a towering two-run home run down the left-field line. For Putnam, the deep fly was her fourth of the season and she picked up RBIs 31 and 32 with the blast.
In the circle for Northridge, Debbie Duran got out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth. After the leadoff batter reached on a single and moved to second on wild pitch, Duran fanned the next three Titans to end the inning.
Fullerton added one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Tracy Allen made things interesting. With one out, Allen blasted her first home run of the season down the left-field line to narrow the gap to 4-3. The next CSUN hitter, Jaci Carlsen, made it to second on a two-base error by the Fullerton second baseman.
However, the next two Matadors struck out to end the rally and the game.
Duran took the loss for Northridge, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing 10 hits with three strikeouts. Krystal Heinle tossed a complete game for Fullerton, striking out seven, to earn the win.
The Matadors and Titans will play a single game Sunday at Anderson Family Field. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
