Northridge Softball Holds 2010 Alumni Game

Nov. 6, 2010

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

The Cal State Northridge softball team held its annual Alumni Game at Matador Diamond on Nov. 6, 2010. With over 25 former Matadors in attendance, the team of alumni battled the current crop of Matadors to a 1-1 tie after four innings of play.

In attendance at the event was a wide swath of former CSUN softball players, ranging from players from the Division II National Championship teams of the 1980s to players who graduated in 2010. Among the notable alumni attendees were Kathy Slaten-Ayala, arguably the greatest pitcher in CSUN softball history, and Christen Bedwell, the last Matador to earn Division I All-American honors.

Also at the game was CSUN Director of Athletics Rick Mazzuto, former Matador head coach and a current Associate Athletics Director at CSUN, Janet Pinneau and Director of Development Jerry DeFelice.

They took on a group of Matadors that returns four All-Big West First Team selections from the 2010 season: Tracy Allen, Jennifer Mosier, Jaci Carlsen and Hannah Fraijo. CSUN also boasts six newcomers to the squad for the upcoming 2011 season. Last season, the Matadors finished 31-22 and 15-6 in Big West Conference action to finish as the league's co-Champions.

For CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers, who, with husband Jason Flowers, was recently featured in an article on NCAA.com, the event was a great opportunity to meet with players both old and young from the Matador annals.

The Matadors have an illustrious history in softball, capturing NCAA Division II National Championships in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1987. Upon moving to Division I, Northridge finished as National Runners-Up in the College World Series in 1994, the first Division I Softball Championship game to be televised on ESPN. Former CSUN Head Coach Gary Torgeson was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association Hall of Fame in 2008.

Flowers and the Matadors are currently participating in their 2010 fall season. The 2011 season will begin in mid-February, 2011. A full schedule for the Matadors in 2011 will be made available shortly.
