Matadors Fall to No. 6 UCLA in Sand Volleyball Debut

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge debuted its first-ever sand volleyball squad Thursday as the Matadors won two of five matches against No. 6 UCLA at the Annenberg Beach House.

The winners for UCLA on the afternoon were sophomore Kamila Tan and freshman Jessyka Ngauamo (#1 doubles), sophomores Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye (#3) and freshmen Skylar Dykstra and Jennie Frager (#4).

The even pairs had the first wave of action, as the #2 doubles team of senior Madie Smith and junior Zoë Nightingale faced CSUN's Sydney Gedryn and Kelcie Randazzo and the #4 squad of Dykstra and Frager took on Marissa Boyd and Casey Hinger.

Dykstra and Frager dispatched of Boyd and Hinger in straight sets, 21-19 and 21-14. Nightingale and Smith took the first set over Gedryn and Randazzo, 22-20, but the Matador pair won the next two by scores of 21-19 and 15-13 to even the overall match score at one win apiece.

In the second flight of matches, Ngauamo and Tan squared off with Natalie Allen and Mahina Haina. Drolson and Inouye faced Alia Casino and Rachel Diaz, while #5 doubles of Taylor Formico and Natalie Miller played Julie Haake and Steffi Miller.

#1 and #3 doubles would win in straight sets to clinch the overall match for the Bruins. Ngauamo and Tan won 21-12, 21-11, while Drolson and Inouye posted a 21-8, 21-14 victory. Formico and Miller fell in straight sets, 21-15, 21-18.

The Matadors continue their debut week this Saturday as CSUN travels to Zuma Beach to take on Pepperdine (10 a.m.) and USC (11 a.m.).
