NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team placed four members on the 2014 All-Big West Women's Tennis Team. Freshmen Vivian Lin and Mickey Hsu picked up All-Big West Singles Second Team honors while Hsu and Kristen Poei earned All-Big West Doubles Second Team honors and Lin and Criss Rodriguez received All-Big West Doubles Honorable Mention.
The quartet of Matadors earning All-Big West honors in 2014 were all newcomers to the team. Three were true freshmen (Hsu, Lin and Poei) while Rodriguez was a junior transfer from Santa Monica College. They helped lead CSUN to a 12-10 overall record and 3-5 mark in the Big West Conference.
Now in his 17th year as the Matadors' head coach, Gary Victor saw the awards as a precursor for future success.
"To have three freshmen and a JC transfer achieve all-league honors bodes well for our program in the coming years," Victor said. "I am very happy for Vivian, Mickey, Kristen and Criss. They earned this honor through a lot of hard work and will be going for bigger honors next year."
Hsu and Poei completed one of the top doubles seasons in Matador history. The tandem went 17-3 on the season, initially competing at the second draw before moving up to the top line later in the season. They went 6-2 against Big West opponents, had an 11-match winning streak during the season and recorded notable victories over Cal Poly, LMU, Long Beach State, Florida International, Harvard, Dartmouth and Cal State Fullerton.
Rodriguez and Lin were the other doubles team to be honored, earning All-Big West Honorable Mention honors after posting a 9-8 overall record. The duo played primarily at the No. 1 draw earlier in the year and recorded notable victories over Air Force, Long Beach State, Florida International and New Mexico State.
In singles action, Lin played her first season of NCAA Tennis at the top draw for a large portion of the season. She finished 11-11 overall and 4-4 against Big West opponents. She had a season-best four-match winning streak during the year and recorded notable victories over Cal Poly, Air Force, Long Beach State, Montana and New Mexico State. She earned Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors twice during the season.
Fellow freshman Hsu tied for the team lead with 12 victories and finished the year 12-8 overall. She started the year at the No. 3 draw, but eventually moved up to the second spot as the season progressed. Hsu had a season-best six-match winning streak during the year and earned notable victories over Air Force, Cal Poly, Boise State, New Mexico State, UC Davis and Hawai'i.
