Matadors Fall to No. 3 UCLA, 7-0, in Season Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Facing the challenge of opening the season against the defending national champions, the Cal State Northridge women's tennis team lost 7-0 to No. 3 UCLA Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Nina Jaworowski battled the Bruins' Maya Johansson to a 7-6, 6-0 loss at the No. 2 singles position.
In doubles action, sophomore Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva lost, 8-0, to Yasmin Schnack and Andrea Remynse at the No. 1 position. In the second doubles spot, freshman Nigora Sirojiddinova and Jaworowski nearly defeated Ashley Joelson and Carling Seguson, falling 8-5. The third doubles position saw sophomore Whitney Paluch and junior Kristy Fournell drop an 8-1 decision to Stephanie Wetmore and Johansson.
Last season, Doane earned All-Big West Second Team honors for her play in doubles, compiling an 18-2 record with then-senior Kanykey Koichumanova.
In singles action, Jaworowski had a pair of set points in the first set before falling 7-6 in the first set to Johansson. She then dropped a 6-0 second set to conclude the No. 2 singles match.
A pair of Matadors made their debuts against the defending national champions. In the No. 1 singles match, Vertesheva lost to Remynse, 6-1 and 6-0. Also debuting for Northridge and head coach Gary Victor was freshman Sirojiddinova lost her No. 4 singles, match, 6-0 and 6-1, to Anna-Viktoria Lind.
In other action for Northridge, Doane lost 6-1 and 6-3 to Joelson at the No. 3 singles position. Paluch lost a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Seguso at the No. 5 spot and Fournell dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Jordan Dockendorf.
The Matadors continues its tough early season test in its next match, traveling to Malibu, Calif., to face No. 29 Pepperdine on Jan. 27. First serve between the Matadors and Waves is slated for 1:30 p.m.
