Cal Poly Defeats Northridge, 7-0, in Big West Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (0-3, 0-1) dropped its Big West Conference Opener, 7-0, to Cal Poly Saturday. The doubles tandem of Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva won their second-straight match, 8-6, over Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong.
Doane, who earned All-Big West Second Team honors for her doubles play last season, and Vertesheva are now 2-1 on the season at the No. 1 doubles position.
In other doubles action, the Mustangs evened the mach following an 8-5 victory by Suzie Matzenauer and Amy Markhoff over Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova in the No. 2 position. In the third match, Diane Filip and Maria Malec took the point with an 8-6 victory over Kristy Fournell and Whitney Paluch.
In singles action, Matzenauer took care of Vertesheva, 6-2 and 6-0, at the No. 1 spot. In the second match, Blalock bested Jaworowski 6-2 in straight sets. Then, Malec earned a 6-2, 6-0 decision of Sirojiddinova in the No. 3 position.
In the second half of the bracket, Whitney Peterson defeated Paluc 6-4 in straight sets. Kristy Fournell won her first set in the No. 5 mach against Diane Filip before retiring. Finally, at the sixth spot, Julie Onishenko made her Northridge debut, falling 6-0 and 6-4 to Shannon Brady.
Northridge remains on the road for its next two matches, heading to the Grand Canyon State for matches at No. 21 Arizona State (Feb. 6) and Arizona (Feb. 7).
