CSUN Tennis Records 7-0 Sweep over Johns Hopkins

March 24, 2011

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge tennis team (11-8) swept Johns Hopkins 7-0 in a non-conference dual match Thursday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. After having their first two matches of the week canceled due to weather, the Matadors stormed out in singles play and did not drop a set on the day.

Having not played since a 6-1 loss to Dartmouth on Mar. 19, the Matadors and Bluejays flipped the script and played singles first in order to avert another rain out. In doing so, CSUN set an early tone in the match and cruised to an unblemished victory.

Brooke Doane won her top-seeded singles contest, 6-1 and 6-0, and Jennifer Sher recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 draw. At No. 3, Nigora Sirojiddinova won 6-0, 6-4 in the third draw.

For Doane, the singles win was her fourth-straight victory and is now 7-10 on the season. Sher earned her team-leading 12th victory of the season and is now 12-4 on the season. Sirojiddinova improved to 7-10 on the season as well with her win.

In the bottom half of the singles bracket, Maria Pistalu won a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 4. Lorraine Cheung took a 6-0, 6-2 verdict in the fifth draw. Finally, Ryma Korab won her sixth-seeded contest, 6-1 and 6-3.

Pistalu is now 9-4 in her second season at Northridge. Cheung is now second on the team with 11 singles victories, standing at 11-5 in her rookie season, Finally, Korab improved to 5-2 in her second season as well.

The teams then moved to doubles and CSUN continued its tough play. Doane and Anna Yang, teammates through the 2010 season, reunited for the first time in 2011 to post an 8-5 victory in the top doubles match.

Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing improved to a perfect 4-0 on the year with an 8-0 victory at the second draw. Finally, Sirojiddinova and Korab played as a tandem for the first time this season and won 8-0 at No. 3.

The Matadors have a little bit of a break until their next contest, a non-conference dual match with Portland on Apr. 1. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. from Matador Tennis Complex.
