NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team put on an impressive performance in its fall debut at the SDSU Fall Classic I. Senior Nina Jaworowski finished 2-1 in both singles and doubles play for the Matadors, teaming with Anna Yang to win the consolation bracket of the top doubles draw.
Although the fall season does not count toward their official record, CSUN and head coach Gary Victor witnessed some individual performances that should give them confidence throughout the rest of the Fall campaign and into the spring season.
After losing their opening match, Jaworowski and Yang rolled through their final two matches in the top doubles draw. They defeated Emma Cioffi and Julia Wais of San Diego State, 9-7, and then toppled Ashley Anderson and Adrianna Radinovic of LMU, 8-2.
In singles, Jaworowski won her opening match due to injury, then fell in straight sets to Alicia Aguilar of San Diego State. However, she rebounded to post a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Cioffi in her third contest of the weekend.
In other doubles action, senior Brooke Doane and sophomore Maria Pistalu went 1-2 on the weekend, posting an 8-1 victory over Marite Raygada and Cara Brown from San Diego. They then lost decisions to teams from San Diego State and Duke.
Doane finished 1-1 in singles action, toping Ana Depenau of San Diego in three sets, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4, before falling to Julia Trunk in three sets as well. Pistalu also compete in the top singles bracket, earning a win over San Diego's Cara Brown in three sets, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-2.
Nigora Sirojiddinova earned a win in singles action, topping LMU's Radinovic in straight sets, 6-0 and 7-5. Yang also picked up a win in the second-seeded singles draw, topping Miya Jin of LM, 6-2, 6-7 and 7-6 (5).
Sabrina Man-Son-Hing played in her first matches as a Matador, teaming with Sirojiddinoa in doubles and competing in singles action.
The Matadors continue their 2010 fall campaign at both the Fullerton Invitational and UCSB Invitational from Oct. 8-10. CSUN hosts the Matador Invitational at the Matador Tennis Complex from Nov. 12-14.
