Matador Doubles Shine at Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Norhtridge women's tennis team kept it stellar doubles play from the 2008 spring season into the fall as a pair of Matador tandems reached the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate finals in both the "A" and "B" flights. Despite losing in the "A" finals, the team of Brooke Doane and newcomer Evgeniya Vertesheya defeated UCLA's Stephanie Wetmore and Alexandria Walters in the semifinals, 8-3,
In getting to the event's finals, Doane and Vertesheya defeated a team from UC Irvine, Hannah Holladay and Ali Borowicz, 8-3, in the opening round and then defeated Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks of New Mexico State, 8-4, in the second round. That set up a meeting with Wetmore and Walters in the semifinals, which the Matadors took over the defending national champion Bruins.
In the finals, Doane and Vertesheya fell 8-3 to UCLA's Nina Pantic and Anna-Viktoria Lin.
Over in the "B" flight, sophomore Nina Jaworowski and newcomer Nigora Sirijiddinova made it to the finals of the bracket before falling, 8-5, to New Mexico State's Laura Boguet and Natalia Salum Soto. Jaworowski and Sirijiddinova received an opening round bye and then defeated NMSU's Paulina Zuniga and Bianca Discorida, 8-5.
In the third round, the pair then got the best of UC Irvine's Heidi Kaloi and Ali Murphy, 8-6. In the semifinals of the bracket, the Matadors defeated another Big West Conference rival, defeating Maria Malec and Shannon Brady, 8-2.
In singles play, Vertesheya and senior Sandra Kukla played in the "A" flight of the singles tournament. Vertesheya rallied in the opening round to defeat UC Irvine's Courtney Byron, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-4, before losing in the next round to Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-1.
Kukla also won her opening round match, defeating New Mexico State's Stephanie Eusebe, 7-5 and 6-2. She then was trailing 6-4 and 5-2 before retiring in a match against Cal State Fullerton's Leslie Bullock.
In the "B" flight of singles play, CSUN entered Sirijiddinova, Doane and Jaworowski. Sirijiddinova dropped her opening round match to Cal Poly's Maria Malec, 7-5 and 6-4. Doane won her opening two matches, defeating Cal State Bakersfield's Veronica Dimas, 6-2 and 6-4, and Loyola Marymount's Jane Pringle, 6-0 and 6-0. She then fell to UC Irvine's Heidi Kaloi in the third round, 6-2 and 6-4.
Jaworowski also won her first two matches in singles, defeating Fullerton's Shelly Injejikian, 7-5 and 6-2, and Cal Poly's Steffi Wong, 6-1 and 6-2, before losing to Long Beach State's Julie Luzar, 6-4 and 7-5.
Paluch and Macias both got out of the first round in the bracket. Onishenko defeated Bakersfield's Charlotte Hughes, 6-0 and 6-2, before losing 6-3 and 6-2 to NMSU's Zuniga. Paluch had an opening round bye and then lost to LMU's Bliss Nixon, 6-0 and 6-4.
Onishenko dropped her opening round match to Discordia, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2, and Massi lost to Kaydee Graham of Bakersfield, 6-0 and 6-2.
The Matadors return to action this fall on Oct. 23-25 at the Western Regionals in San Diego, Calif.
