Northridge Opens Matador Invitational with Solid Performances

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team performed well at the opening day of the Matador Invitational. Freshman Evgeniya Vertesheva defeated Pepperdine's Jillian Braverman and BYU's Kristina Doerr in the A bracket of singles competition, while in doubles action the Matadors picked up several impressive victories.

Vertesheva opened her tournament in doubles action with fellow freshman Nigora Sirijiddinova to defeat UCSB's Natalia Lozano and Sofia Novak, 8-5. They will face Fullerton's team of Shelly Injejikian and Leslie Bullock.

Then in singles, Vertesheva won her opening round match, 6-0 and 6-3, over Braverman before taking a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Doerr. She now moves on to face Boise State's Pichittra Thongdach at 10:30 tomorrow morning.

In other doubles action for Northridge, senior Victoria Brymer and sophomore Brooke Doane defeated BYU's Elle Carney and McCall Jones, 8-5, to set up a meeting with the top-seeded team from Pepperdine, Anamika Bhargava and Alex Liles in the A bracket.

Joining Vertesheva and Sirijiddinova in the B were sophomores Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch. The duo took an 8-4 dev=Cision over Fullerton's Cheyenne Inglis and Karina Akhmedova. They face Romina Nedakovic and Tania Rice tomorrow.

Finally, in the C bracket of doubles competition, junior Ashley Macias and freshman Amira Massi defeated Heidi Jackson and Courtney Ringler of The Master's College, 8-4 to set up a meeting with UCSB's Ratchaya Chaichanachaicharn and Asagi Onaga.

In singles play, Brymer lost her first round match in the A bracket. The senior fell, 6-0, 6-1, to Katia Sabate of Fresno Pacific. She faces Rice in the backdraw tomorrow morning. Doane also lost, falling 3-6, 6-2 and 6-0 to UCSB's Novak in the B bracket.

Jaworowski posted an impressive singles victory in the B bracket, rallying past UCSB's Lozano, 5-7, 6-3 and 6-2. She moves on to face Novak tomorrow. Finally, Sirijiddinova lost her opening match in the B bracket, dropping a 7-6, 6-4 decision to Nedakovic. She plays Vanessa Heroux in the backdraw tomorrow.

Fournell split her matches in the C bracket of singles competition. She defeated Bakersfield's Kirstie Jenkins, 6-2, in both sets. However, she then lost to Fullerton's Bullock, 2-6 6-3 and 6-1. Also in the C bracket, Onishenko dropped her match to Fullerton's Akhmedova, 6-2, 6-3.

Paluch wrapped up the bracket with a pair of victories for Northridge. She defeated Fullerton's Jerusha Cruz, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round. She then rallied to take a 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6 victory over UCSB's Chelsea Mosser in the second round. She faces Bullock tomorrow.

Finally, in the D bracket of singles play, freshman Amira Massi and Macias both lost their opening round matches. Massi lost 6-3 and 6-4 to Pepperdine's Danielle Thomasma. Macias fell 6-1 in both sets to UCSB's Diane Phan.

Matches resume tomorrow morning at the Matador Tennis Complex beginning at 9 a.m.
