June 15, 2011
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2012 ITA Kick-off Weekend event at the University of Miami, CSUN head coach Gary Victor announced. In Coral Gables, Fla., the Matadors will square off against the Hurricanes, the Bulls of South Florida and the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara from Jan. 28-Jan. 30.
"It is certainly a privilege to be invited to a national tournament like this and we are excited to compete against the Hurricanes, one of the top tennis programs in the nation," Victor said.
Following a 16-10 season in 2011 that saw Northridge finish the year ranked 73rd in the nation, the Matadors are the fourth seed in the event and will face top-seeded Miami, who went 21-7 in 2011 and finished the year ranked seventh in the nation. The two teams will open the event on Saturday, January 28 at 10 a.m. (EST).
South Florida finished the 2011 season ranked 41st in the nation and with an 11-12 overall record. UC Santa Barbara went 13-10 overall and ended the year 62nd in the polls. The Gauchos defeated Northridge, 4-3, in a tightly contested match at Matador Tennis Complex on Mar. 12.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features 15 men's and 15 women's host sites with four teams at each site vying to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The 15 women's institutions that win both of their matches qualify for the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship, hosted by Virginia, February 17-20, 2012.
CSUN figures to be led by Jennifer Sher, who earned All-Big West Singles and Doubles First Team honors in 2011. She finished the year 21-3 in doubles play and a team-best 17-5 in singles action during her first season with the Matadors.
Other top players set to return for Victor and Northridge are Nigora Sirojiddinova, who owns a 41-26 career singles mark, Maria Pistalu, who earned All-Big West Doubles Honorable Mention in 2011, Anna Yang, a top doubles player with a career mark of 27-13, and Lorraine Cheung, who posted a 14-6 record in her first year at the school.
