Paluch and Jaworowski's Doubles Title Highlights Matadors Performance at Fullerton Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge juniors Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch captured the "B" Doubles Flight title to highlight the Matadors' performance at the Cal State Fullerton Inviational last weekend. The tandem defeated a pair of teams from Cal Poly at the end of the flight in a pair of 9-8 decisions to take the title.
Jaworowski and Paluch made quick work of their first few opponents in Fullerton. In the opening round, they defeated Concordia-Irvine's Cristina Paiva-Flor and Melanie Abella, 8-0, and then took an 8-1 decision over UC Irvine's Ali Murphy and Hayley Young.
In the semifinals, the duo battled to a 9-8 victory over Diane Filip and Alexa Lee. Finally, Jaworoski and Paluch got the best of another pair of Mustangs, recording a 9-8 victory over Jocelyn Davis and Ashley Pane.
In other doubles action for the Matadors, junior Brooke Doane and freshman Anna Yang reached the semifinals of the "A" flight before losing to Long Beach State's Jakilin Alawi and Rachel Manasse, 8-4. The 49ers would eventually win the flight title.
Among other top finishers for the Matadors in Fullerton were a host of newcomers to the squad. Freshman Ryma Korab reached the finals of the Singles "C" flight before falling to LMU's Estelle Le Porte, 6-2 and 7-5. On her way to the finals, she defeated players from Cal State Bakersfield, LMU and her teammate, Zarina Pisnoy, in the semifinals.
Before falling to Korab, Pisnoy reached the semifinals of the "C" flight by picking up wins over competitors from Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.
Yang also performed well in singles action, reaching the semifinals of the "B" flight. She picked up victories over players from Cal State Los Angeles, Concordia-Irvine and LMU before falling to Joclyn Davis of Cal Poly, 6-2 and 6-1.
The singles "B" flight almost produced an all-CSUN final, as Doane also lost in the semifinals of the bracket. She earned wins over Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly before falling to LBSU's Julie Luzar in the semifinals, 7-5 and 7-6.
In other singles action, both Amira Massi and Paluch picked up opening-round victories in their respective flights before losing in the second round.
The Matadors will be in San Diego for their next fall tournament, when they participate in the Western Regionals from Oct. 22-25.
