Matadors Compete at Texas A&M Invitational in Advance of MPSF Indoor Championships
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Cal State Northridge men's and women's track & field competed in its final indoor meet before the MPSF Championships Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
With limited athletes competing on both sides, the Matador women scored 42 points to finish fifth while the men finished seventh with 42 points. The meet featured the host Aggies, a Southeastern Conference powerhouse, TCU, UTEP, Houston, Rice and Texas State.
The Matador women got top-three finishes from Ashley Henry in the high jump (3rd), Jenna Yowell (2nd) in the pole vault and Marissa Rossi in the long jump (2nd). Henry matched her season-best with a height of 5-7 (1.70) while Yowell cleared a season-best 12-3.50 (3.75). Rossi finished with a best mark of 18-1 (5.51).
Several members of the women's squad also set indoor season-bests on Saturday. Hafsatu Kamara clocked a CSUN season-best in the 60 meters (7.65) while Le'Shel Vines (7.77), Chiza Eze (7.80) and Briana Davis (7.90) also had season-best times.
Lexis Lambert ran 24.80 in the 200 meters which is also a Matador indoor season-best. She was followed closely by Shawnta Barnes (24.90) and Marie Veale (25.02) which also posted season-bests as did Davis (25.91).
Lambert also ran well in the 400 meters clocking a season-best 56.11 with Breionna Jackson (56.96) and Samantha Dirks (57.62) also finishing in the top-10. The 4x400 meter relay team of Jackson, Lambert, Barnes and Dirks ran a season-best 3:48.04 to finish fourth.
On the men's side, Derrick Harris ran a season-best 6.97 in the prelims of the 60 meters to reach the final where he ran 7.02. Carl Horlsey competed for the first time this indoor season and ran 6.98 which was ninth in the prelims. In the 200 meters, Kenneth Stone clocked a season-best 22.16 to finish 13th while Issiah Cantu ran 22.60 and Darquis Rucker 22.61, both season-bests.
Cantu also matched his season-best in the 400 meters with a time of 49.11 while Ezekial Glass had CSUN's best time in the 800 meters this season, 1:56.73. Hunter Hays also bettered his time in the mile finishing eighth in 4:12.64.
The Matador 4x400 relay of Khalid Jones, Stone, Donovan Toban and Cantu placed seventh in a season-best of 3:16.41.
Toban and Derian Taylor each had a season-best in the triple jump as Toban finished fourth with a best leap of 47-5 (14.45) and Taylor was fifth at 47-4.25 (14.43).
Senior Tucker Weathers had the Matador men's best finish of the day as he placed second in the shot put after posting a season-best 53-7 (16.33). Weathers was also eighth in the weight throw with a best of 49-9.25.
The MPSF Indoor Championships get underway Friday, Feb. 22 and run through Saturday, Feb. 23 at the University of Washington.
