Matadors Successful in Final Big West Championship Tuneup

IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge was successful in its bid to improve on season-bests Saturday and Sunday at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine.

The Matador women had the better of things as four sprinters bettered their time in the 200 meters. Le'Shel Vines clocked a CSUN season-best 24.09, the fourth-best time in the conference this season. Lexis Lambert ran a season-best of 24.12 followed closely by teammate Hafsatu Kamara at 24.13 as both moved up on the Big West performance list. Samantha Dirks also posted a season-best running 24.49 and Briana Davis also got under the Big West standard with a season-best time of 24.76.

In addition, the 4x100 relay team of Vines, Kamara, Lambert and Marie Veale ran a conference-leading 44.69. Veale also posted an improvement in the 100 hurdles running a season-best 14.61.

The throwers also had a nice meet as Catherine Chidester had a season-best 164-9 (50.22) in the hammer which is a CSUN-best and top-10 in the Big West. Monique Griffiths also posted a season-best 162-2 (49.44).

In the shot put, Mariah Counts posted a season-best 44-8 (13.61) which is a conference qualifier and Samantha Sinclair threw 40-11 (12.47). Jakayla Daniels also reached the Big West standard in the discus with a toss of 144-10 (44.16).

On the track for the men's squad, Hunter Hays ran a season-best 1:54.93 in the 800 meters which is just inside the Big West qualifying time of 1:55.00.

In the field events, Jory Rucker finished third in the long jump posting a season-best 23-11.75 (7.31) which is currently third in the Big West behind teammate Nicholas DiMartino who is second at 24-6.50. Gavin Fallen, already with a Big West qualifying mark, also posted a season-best in the discus with a mark of 170-4 (51.91).

The heptathlon and decathlon portion of the Big West Championships get underway Friday, May 3 and run through Saturday, May 4. The main portion of the conference championship meet takes place May 10-11, all taking place at the Matador Track & Field Complex.
