Shelese Ruffin and Whitney Hooks each won an event as the Cal State Northridge women's track and field team completed the weekend's action at UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational and Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic.
In Tempe, Ariz., Ruffin highlighted the Matador effort on the track as she won the 400 meters in a season-best time of 54.89. Hooks highlighted the field events winning the shot put with a season-best mark of 47-1.50.
Also at ASU, Precious Watkins finished 11th in the 100 meters in a time of 12.11, Sierra Brooks was 14th in 12.20 and Shana Solomon was 15th in 12.23. Brooks took 25th in the 200 meters in 25.26 and Stella Dugall was 43rd in 26.10. In addition to Ruffin's win in the 400, Brenna Hoffman finished 28th in 58.02.
LaShandra Batiste ran a PR of 14.41 to finish 18th in the 100 meter hurdles followed by Dugall (14.83) in 25th and Desirae Gonder (14.96) in 27th. Batiste also clocked a personal-best time of 1:01.00 in the 400 hurdles to finish in the top-10 and Gonder ran 1:03.25 to finish 18th.
The 4x400 relay team of Cox, Gonder, Watkins and Hoffman ran 3:41.17 and shattered the team's previous season-best in finishing fourth. The 4x100 squad ran 46.55 and placed sixth.
In the field events, Morgan Bogard took second place in the premiere section of the women's hammer with a throw of 187-2 (57.04) which was just a shade off her season-best of 187-3. Stephanie Ralls also posted a second-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 161-0 which was a season-best. Hooks completed a solid meet by finishing sixth in the hammer with a PR of 164-7. Claire Morgan placed ninth in the discus with a mark of 147-4 followed by Bogard who was 11th with a mark of 146-11.
In the jumps, Ese Ntekume finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-6 amd was also 15th in the long jump with a best of 16-9.25. Ashley Griffith was 19th in the high jump at 5-4.25 and Tiana Webberley was eighth in the pole vault at 11-10.50 followed by Megan Hill (11-4.50) Jenna Hulion (11-4.50) and Brittany Hamilton (10-10.75).
The Matadors sent their distance runners to the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA with Sharon Wilkinson posting a team-best finish of seventh in the 5,000 meters. Wilkinson easily beat her previous personal-best after running 18:08.72 with Zitlalic Ley finishing 13th in 18:27.17 and Marissa Crook 18th in 19:32.02.
In the 1,500 meters, Lilyana Morejon placed 20th in 4:49.16 followed by Anna Rosales (5:22.40) in 33rd, Mallory Day (5:25.43) in 35th and Rebecca Huffman in 37th (5:40.34). In the 800 meters, Vanessa Carr took 17th in a season-best 2:23.23 while Natalie Wollaston was 24th (2:26.75) and Desiree Karotko was 25th (2:27.07).
