Matadors Head to Seattle for MPSF Indoor Championships

MATADORS TRAVEL TO SEATTLE FOR 2010 MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The Cal State Northridge track & field team is in the homestretch of the 2010 indoor season as the Matador men and women head to the MPSF Indoor Championships at Washington's Dempsey Indoor this weekend. The MPSF Championships get underway on Friday, Feb. 26 with the men's weight throw at 12:30 p.m. The first event on the track will be the men's 60 meter hurdles final as part of the heptathlon. The final event on Saturday is the women's 4x400 meter relay which is scheduled for 3 p.m.
THE MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD Ten of the West's top track and field programs participate in MPSF Championships competition in indoor track and field. School's competing include eight of the Pac-10's nine track and field programs: Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Washington State. The Matadors and Long Beach State respresent the Big West.
THE 2009 MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The UCLA men and the Stanford women won the 2009 MPSF Indoor titles while the Matador men took eighth while the women were ninth. Northridge earned 56 points on the men's side as DeShawn Waters (200 meters), Reindell Cole (long jump) and Robert Robinson (heptathlon) finished a Matador-best second in his event. On the women's side, Northridge earned 32.5 points led by Morgan Bogard's second place finish in the weight throw.
NORTHRIDGE MPSF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES Senior Morgan Bogard comes in as the top-ranked Northridge athlete as she has the top qualifying mark in the women's weigh throw with a mark of 62-6.75 (19.07) ... The Matadors last won an conference indoor championship in 2007, when the Northridge women scored 165 points to claim the Western Athletic Conference crown ... The Matador women also finished first in the Big Sky in 1999 and were third on three different occasions (1997, 1998, 2000) ... the Northridge men finished as the runner-up in the Big Sky in 1998 and 2001 ... In 2008, the Matadors placed eighth in the MPSF on the women's side (38.50 points) and were ninth on the men's side (49) ... Northirdge will send a total of 40 student-athletes (20 men, 20 women) to this week's MPSF Championships.
"We're looking for solid performances out of people (Reindell Cole, Derek Cooper, Robert Robinson and Morgan Bogard) who have provisonally qualified or are on the bubble for the NCAA's," said Strametz. "We're not really concerned with team scoring we're just going to go up there and do the best we can do and we'll see what happens."
