Matadors Head to Irvine For Asics/Steve Scott Invitational This Weekend

The Cal State Northridge men's and women's track & field teams, in one of its final meets before the Big West Championships, heads to UC Irvine to compete in the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium Saturday and Sunday (May 2-3).
Six field events Saturday afternoon begin with the women's hammer throw and men's javelin throw at 2:00 p.m.
Four track events are scheduled for Saturday evening with the women's 5,000 meters at 6:00 p.m., the men's 5,000 at 6:25 p.m., women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:50 p.m. and men's steeplechase at 7:05 p.m.
Field events begin Sunday with the women's shot put and women's pole vault at 10:00 a.m.
Track events Sunday start with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 12:00 p.m.

The Matadors will send a limited squad to the Occidental Invitational next Saturday (May 9) so this weekend's meet will be a large portion of the squad's last tuneup before the conference championships.
Individually, the Matador men have the best time/mark in the Big West in seven events led by De'Shawn Waters in the 100 (10.42) and 200 meters (21.20). The men's 4x100 relay, which ran 40.49 at the Mt. SAC Relays, also leads the conference. In the field events, Reindell Cole leads the long jump (25-9.50), Rolando Felizola leads the triple jump (49-8.50) and Derek Cooper leads the shot put (58-0.25) and discus (171-10).
For the Northridge women, Sherrina Lofton owns the conference's best time in the 100 (11.57) and 200 meters (23.67) while both 4x100 (45.17) and 4x400 (3:40.91) relay teams lead the Big West. In the field, Stephanie Ralls owns the top mark in the javelin (159-3.25) heading into the final pair of meets.
Northridge has 10 individual NCAA-regional qualifiers to date this season: Lofton (100, 200, 400 meters, heptathlon), Shelese Ruffin (400 meters, 400 meter hurdles), Whitney Hooks (shot put), Ralls (javelin), Waters (100 and 200 meters), Thomas Johnson (high jump), Cole (long jump), Felizola (triple jump), Cooper (shot put, discus) and Cody Pearce (hammer throw).
The women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays as well as the men's 4x100 relay also have regional qualifying times this season.
