IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Sherrina Lofton captured the Big West hepathlon crown on Saturday edging teammate Shelese Ruffin while Robert Robinson led the Matador men with a third place finish in the decathlon at Anteater Stadium.
The Northridge women earned a total of 21 points in the heptathlon as Lofton earned 10 points for the win, Ruffin earned eight for second and Stella Dugall picked up three for her eighth-place finish.
Cal Poly's James Nunno won the decathlon after scoring 7,208 points in the ten events.
Lofton took home the heptathlon title after finishing with 5,224 points, her first career multi-event crown. She came into the day in second place after collecting 3,228 points in day one, but surged to the title after picking up 697 points in the long jump, 565 in the javelin and 734 in the 800 meter run. Ruffin scored nearly reached her career-high with 5,023 points, while Dugall scored a lifetime-best 4,710 points.
The remainder of the Big West Track & Field Championships will take place next week in Anteater Stadium. Friday's action kicks off with field events at 11 am, while the track events get started at 4 pm. Tickets will be $12 for adults for a single day pass and $20 for adults for a two-day Championship pass. Students and youths will be charged $6 for a single day and $10 for a two-day pass.
