Matadors Open Road Trip With Straight Set Loss at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge struggled on offense for the second straight match as the Matadors were dealt a 25-23, 25-22, 25-16 loss at UC Santa Barbara Friday night.

In dropping two straight matches for the first time this year, CSUN (12-6, 3-3 Big West) was out-hit by UCSB .254-.182. The Matadors also struggled offensively in their last outing when they were out-hit .219-.092 in a four-set loss to UC Irvine.

On Friday, juniors Mahina Haina and Britney Graff each had a team-high eight kills with Haina hitting .280 in 25 attacks and Graff hitting .114 in 35 swings. Freshman Cieana Stinson added six kills (.190) while Sam Kaul chipped in five kills (.308). Both Stinson and Kaul recorded three blocks apiece.

Setter Sydney Gedryn registered 24 assists to go with nine digs while Monica McFarland and Cindy Ortiz each dug a team-high 14 balls. Although CSUN out-blocked yet another opponent, this time 6.0-4.0, the Matadors were out-dug by the Gauchos by the sizable margin of 71-52.

UCSB (9-10, 2-2 Big West), which won for just the second time in its last seven matches, was led by Leah Sully's match-high 16 kills (.238) while Britton Taylor added 10 kills (.400).

The Matadors, whose winless streak against the Gauchos was extended to nine straight, battled in a tight opening set falling by just two points after hitting just .107 as a team. CSUN attempted to reverse its fortunes in set two as the Matadors committed just one hitting error the entire frame while out-hitting the Gauchos .400-.294 but UCSB came out on top 25-22. The Gauchos then caught fire in the final set, putting down 19 kills as a team while hitting .326 thus keeping Northridge winless in Santa Barbara since the 2007 season.

Cal State Northridge continues its three-match road trip Saturday as the Matadors travel up the coast to take on Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
