Sydney Gedryn, Casey Hinger Named to AVCA All-Region Team
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Cal State Northridge volleyball continued its record-setting 2013 season as senior Sydney Gedryn and junior Casey Hinger were both named to the 2013 AVCA Division I All-Region Team as announced Tuesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Pacific South Region first team featured two Matador players for the first time in school history. CSUN had single players named in 1992, 1994, 2003, 2004 and 2012.
Hinger, who was a first team All-West Region selection in 2012, was one of three middle blockers named to the first team joining Chloe Ferrari of San Diego and Alexis Olgard of USC. The three-time first team All-Big West selection is the first CSUN player to garner All-Region honors multiple times. This season she led the 24-7 Matadors in kills, kills per set, points and blocks as CSUN advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
"I am so honored to be recognized with Syd this year," said Hinger. "Our team played our hearts out and she was a big part of our success. We really set the tone for Northridge volleyball in the years to come, I couldn't be prouder of this team!"
"Casey is an extremely versatile volleyball player," said Head Coach Jeff Stork. "She has developed past just being an outstanding net player. She is now becoming very proficient at passing and defending, which is making her one of best players in the Big West Conference and the Pacific South Region. I believe that is what the other coaches in the Pacific South Region see in Casey when selecting her as an All-Region player."
Gedryn, a senior setter, earned All-Region honors for the first time after helping the Matadors to 24 wins, their first Big West Championship and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004. The team leader in assists with 1,175 which ranks 10th in CSUN's single-season history, Gedryn is also one of the Matadors' all-time blocking leaders. She and Hinger combined for 219 total blocks in 2013 and both rank among the top-10 in Matador history. Gedryn also had a team-high 26 aces this season which gives her 79 in her four-year career.
"First off congratulations to Casey for making it for the second time!" said Gedryn. "I'm very thankful for being selected. I'm so proud of my team and all the amazing accomplishments we had this year. Casey and I would not be where we are without everyone else."
"Sydney is not a prototypical setter," said Stork. "While setting is her primary responsibility, she has developed herself into a point scoring setter; kills and blocks at the net and aces from the service line. Syd's versatility has allowed our team to do things which are unique in the NCAA and I believe the coaches in the Pacific South Region recognize this and see Syd's contributions to our team's success.
"The CSUN Women's Volleyball Team was extraordinarily successful in the 2013 season: we had 23 regular season wins, we shared the Big West Conference Championship, and we won our first round NCAA Tournament match," added Stork. "These successes were the result of the commitment and dedication of 15 players, three coaches and numerous support staff over the past several years. I am extremely proud of everyones' contributions this year and look forward to similar successes in the future. We are and will always be a TEAM."
